I have a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINP) problem. Is there a free solver for such a problem?

  • $\begingroup$ SCIP is an open-source solver for Constrained Integer Programming, so it is also able to solve MINLPs. $\endgroup$ Commented Aug 1 at 9:41
  • $\begingroup$ BARON demo mode is free (but not open source), and handles up to 10 constraints and variables and up to 50 nonlinear operations. $\endgroup$ Commented Aug 1 at 16:26

COUENNE

An open-source deterministic global MINLP solver.

BONMIN

An open-source local MINLP solver.

Update: Octeract Engine is no longer free as of summer 2022. The free version has since been replaced by Octeract Neural.

Octeract Engine

(our own solver) is a commercial massively parallel deterministic global MINLP solver that is free for academics. What's more interesting is that starting next month the 1-core version of Octeract Engine will also be free for commercial purposes (therefore for everyone). We're still setting up the web framework for people to get that version automatically, but in the meantime you can just request a commercial trial on our website and we'll send you the free 1-core licence automatically when the trial runs out.

Since I have written a lot of the code I cannot overstate how biased I am, but this is the solver I would recommend - as of the current version (1.9) the 1-core version finds feasible solutions for 94.5% of 3,016 test problems (pretty much every test problem ever published) within 30 minutes, which is vastly superior to open-source alternatives.

Timefold

Our open source solver for Java, Python and Kotlin under the Apache License (free for commercial use too) that handles non-linear problems (including MINP problems), but the constraints are written as code (not math equations), so not sure if that's what you're looking for.

OR-Tools

OR-Tools has a number of separate solvers. There might be a MINP solver in there.

COIN-OR

COIN-OR has a number of separate solvers. There might be a MINP solver in there.

You can check the Minotaur library (also added in COIN-OR). https://minotaur-solver.github.io/index.html

As mentioned on the website, for any queries, you can reach Ashutosh Mahajan, amahajan [at] iitb.ac.in.

You can check the NEOS Server which provides free solvers for mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems. You can use solvers like Bonmin or Couenne via their web-based platform.
